I got my start as a writer in a place notorious for its opacity—academia. Always on the sidelines because I wanted my work to be accessible to a broader audience, I used my time studying and later working at universities to transition to 1) outreach, where I could “translate” the latest research for a broader audience, and 2) tech ethics, which gave me unique insight into how and why we build the algorithms that guide our online experiences, for better or worse.
So, yes, I’m committed to creating the best content based on the most rigorous research. But I also respect the role different tools play in helping that content get to the people who need it most. And if it isn’t clear by now, I can write fully optimized content that checks all the boxes: engaging storytelling, relevant material, actionable prose, SEO mastery, keyword-rich, reader-friendly, evergreen or trend-driven, and algorithm-approved. I know the rules, and I’m not here to exploit them. A NOTE ABOUT AI
I prefer to work without the assistance of AI when it comes to content writing, except in rare cases when I consult it for insight into technical details (the same way one might use Google for research).
I have been working on AI topics and the ethics of machine learning for a decade and have a deep understanding of how this technology works. AI tools (like ChatGPT, Jasper, Writesonic, etc.) do not understand information; they simply recognize patterns and attempt to recreate it based on training data (which was originally written by people like me). That said, I do not turn away clients who want to use AI or who are interested in developing prompts for workflow management. But that kind of work is a separate conversation.
I am happy to work with clients who use certain AI checkers, provided they demonstrate familiarity with how these tools work and the extent to which they offer no guarantee of accuracy. However, I will not work with clients who use Originality.ai due to the outrageous number of false positives it generates (their confidence is based on research they conduct internally, which lacks appropriate transparency, in my opinion and experience). I am happy to run content through tools like Content at Scale, Copyleaks, GPT Zero, and the like, as well as cite reliable sources throughout the text, to allay any fears that your content is somehow unnatural or incorrect.
